The Strozzi Chapel
At the head of the left side
of the transept, is the raised Strozzi Chapel. In the niche under its
entryway, is a Deposition and Saints, a fresco from the 1300s,
in the style of Orcagna's school. The Chapel dates from the middle of
the 14th century and was frescoed by Nardo di Cione, Andrea Orcagna's
brother, c.1357. On pillars and the vaulted arch are Saints and the figure
of Saint Thomas Aquinas is repeated on the vaults. On the back wall, is
the Last Judgement and a large stained-glass window based on a
cartoon by Andrea Orcagna and Nardo di Cione. On the left wall is a fresco
of Paradise and on the right wall is Hell, based on Dante's poetry.
On
the altar, and still in its original frame, is The Vision of Saint
Thomas, a polyptych by Andrea Orcagna, signed and dated 1357.
